The photo in our header on this site is of the United States Supreme Court building in Washington, D.C. Although I took this photo myself, this iconic image can be found all over the internet.
I chose this photo for the header because “Equal Justice Under Law” is the goal of the United States legal system. There simply is no higher or more important objective of our Third Branch of government.
And the phrase itself is brilliant. Four simple words, together conveying a mighty and lofty — yet fundamental and foundational — principle.
“Justice” is the main idea. Our Third Branch of government is about achieving justice. Or, maybe more precisely, our Third Branch is about pursuing justice. After all, our justice system has been invented and developed by people. Like the other two branches of our government, our justice system is by, about, and for people. So, in the same way that people are imperfect, so is our justice system.
How do we know what justice looks like in any given case? By reference to our laws. Hence, “Justice Under Law.” Our laws are derived from Constitutions, statutes, case law, and administrative rules and regulations. We will be providing information on each of these law sources in upcoming posts on this website and in upcoming Webinars.
Which brings us to the “Equal” of “Equal Justice Under Law.” What is equality of justice? We will tackle this pivotal idea — which is inextricably intertwined with LawYou’s mission — in later posts.
